The Commission for Aviation Regulation was established on February 27, 2001 and it is responsible for the regulation of airport charges at Irish airports. From October 2004 Dublin Airport is also the only airport currently subject to economic regulation. The legislation provides that the Commission for Aviation Regulation assumes responsibility for the regulation of charges for terminal services provided by the Irish Aviation Authority and for a number of other aviation functions that were previously the responsibility of the Minister for Public Enterprise.
Determining airport charges on the basis of independent, objective and transparent criteria, as well as sound economic principles is welcomed by the DAA as a positive move. Dublin Airport plays an important role in the national development of Ireland. As a result the setting of airport charges is a key issue, one that has ramifications for the economic wellbeing of the country and the development of adequate facilities to facilitate the growing number of passengers at Dublin Airport.
