T2’s New Bow-Shaped Structure

The bow-shaped structure in front of T2 will facilitate circulation of arriving and departing passengers

The bow-shaped, steel structure linked by a bridge to T2 and currently taking shape in front of the new terminal, is an integral part of the design for the circulation of T2`s arriving and departing passengers.

The so-called Vertical Circulation Core (VCC), to give it its technical title, will enable arriving passengers to descend from the bridge at Arrivals Level to the kerbside where they can access taxis and busses for their onward journey. The VCC will also allow departing passengers who don`t require traditional check-in or to deposit luggage at ground level in T2`s Check-In Hall, to enter the terminal at the Arrivals Level and then quickly rise to the Departures Level.

The VCC will contain three lifts, one of which will be used to recycle trolleys, two escalators and a stair case. It is being built by Martifer, the Portuguese company, currently completing the external finishes on the new terminal, and will have a largely glazed exterior when completed next Spring. The covered canopy, that will provide shelter for taxi and bus customers, is also clearly taking shape at the base of the VCC.

It is planned in time to extend the bridge at Arrivals Level beyond the VCC, over the T2 Departures Road, to a new multi-storey car park, located opposite the new terminal.
