Workers in three countries are currently building 90 lifts and escalators for Dublin Airport’s new passenger terminal T2.
Multi-national firm Otis won the T2 lifts and escalators contract and is supplying 54 lifts and 36 escalators for the new terminal. All of the escalators for T2 are being built at a factory in Breclav in the Czech Republic.
The lifts for T2 are being built by two separate Otis plants, as there are two different types of lift being installed in the new terminal. T2 is to get 21 Gen2 lifts and 33 traditional lifts. Gen2 lifts require less space than traditional lifts as they use a flat, polyurethane-coated steel belt rather than steel cables to suspend the lift car.
Using the steel belt to propel the lift requires much less energy and reduces the size of the machinery needed to power the lift by about 70%. This means there is no need for a separate machine room either above or below the lift shaft.
The 21 Gen2 lifts are being built at a factory in Gien, in the centre of France, while workers at a factory in the Turkish city of Istanbul are assembling 33 traditional lifts for T2.
